WHEN WORK IS PERSONAL
Sunday, May 11 marks Mother’s Day – a day we hold close to heart at Herskind.
Not only because we admire all the incredible mothers out there, but because so much of Herskind’s soul is rooted in the relationship between a mother and a daughter.
Birgitte (Head of Design) and her daughter Andrea (Head of Creatives) not only share DNA – they also share a workspace and a deep passion for what they do.
From the Boutique to the Brand
"We’ve always been close," says Andrea. "Ever since my first teenage job at my mom’s clothing store in Copenhagen K, we’ve worked together. Later I became a design assistant at her company, and eventually, we started Herskind together."
That shared history has become a foundation for trust and deep understanding – and for knowing exactly how to complement one another.
"We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, which makes us a great team," Andrea explains.

Balance Through Differences
Of course, it hasn’t always been easy.
"Sometimes it feels like we’re colleagues first and mother and daughter second," Andrea admits.
To which Birgitte adds: "It’s important to protect the mother-daughter bond – otherwise everything ends up being about work."
Their different personalities create a natural push and pull in their daily work.
"I love planning and structure," Andrea says, "while my mom has this Pippi Longstocking belief that everything will just work out – and somehow it usually does!"
Birgitte laughs: "I’m definitely the spontaneous one, and Andrea (and the rest of the team!) needs a clear plan. But we’ve learned to meet in the middle – with mutual respect."
Creative Roles, Shared Vision
Their partnership thrives on their contrasting strengths.
"My mom is a fearless creator. I’m more about storytelling – both visually and in writing," says Andrea.
"She designs the beautiful collections, and I translate them into a brand universe and voice. That handover between us works incredibly well."
Birgitte agrees: "From my point of view, one plus one equals three. We want the same thing – and I know Andrea is the best person to communicate my vision."

Moments That Matter
One of their most emotional moments together?
"Our first real runway show at Copenhagen Fashion Week. We stepped out for the final bow, and the church was full of people clapping and smiling. It was unforgettable," Andrea recalls.
"There have been so many special milestones," Birgitte adds. "Every time we reach a goal, we cheer, and then we set the next one. That journey – together – is what makes it all worth it."
A Mother-Daughter Mission
Building a business together isn’t just a professional journey – it’s deeply personal.
"It means the world to share a passion like this," Andrea says. "We’re not just creating collections; we’re creating memories we could never have had otherwise."
"I feel incredibly privileged to work with my daughter," Birgitte says simply.
